Cauliflower Steak Complete

My family loves steak!  I’ve been trying to find “meaty” alternatives.  I’ve used portabella mushrooms as a substitute, but whoever thought of a cauliflower steak?  I saw a recipe that inspired this, but was much more time consuming.  I like quick and easy recipes, so here is my version.  The most important item to me was the cast iron skillet for this recipe.  My meat loving husband thought this was delicious, and said it was an excellent “meatless” choice!  It seemed meaty like a steak, but is so much better for you.  So, here it is, delicious and easy!

Take 1 head of cauliflower (serves 2), and cut 1 1/2 to 2 inch slices.  You will get your best pieces in the center, but I also use all the little pieces.

Cauliflower prep

Rub the cauliflower steaks and pieces with a bit of olive oil.  Sprinkle with either an organic steak seasoning, or an all purpose seasoning.  I like seasonings from  local farm Beans to Blossoms, but you can find a good one at any healthy grocery store.  I overdid the seasoning a bit, so next time, I would cut it back quite a bit so as not to overpower the taste of the cauliflower.  You can season to taste.

Cauliflower cooking

Put enough oil to cover the skillet, on medium high heat, then put cauliflower steaks in, and cook until one side is golden, about 4-6 minutes, then turn, and cook the same amount of time.  Place on a paper towel lined plate to remove any excess oil.  Pair with a nice green salad topped with avocado, red bell pepper, and a dressing of lemon, olive oil, and chives.  Another option is to pair with green beans, and a sweet potato.  Either way, I hope you enjoy this tasty meal as much as we did!
