Let’s get one thing straight: I am not here to take your coffee.

But if coffee is the only thing holding your day together, we need to talk. Caffeine nudges cortisol up. That’s part of why it feels so good. When your stress hormones are already running hot, the way you drink it can be the difference between a nice lift and a 3pm crash, followed by lying awake at midnight.

Coffee mistakes that keep cortisol stuck

  • Drinking it the second you wake up. Your body naturally makes a burst of cortisol in the first hour or so of the morning. Adding caffeine on top of that peak is like pouring gas on a fire that’s already lit.
  • Drinking it on an empty stomach. Coffee instead of breakfast is a recipe for a blood sugar dip, and your body answers a blood sugar dip with… more stress hormones.
  • Cup after cup to keep going. If you need three or four just to function, that’s a sign your energy is running on stress, not on fuel.
  • Afternoon coffee. Caffeine hangs around for hours. That 3pm latte can still be messing with your sleep at 11.

Cortisol-friendly coffee rules

  1. Wait about 90 minutes after waking before your first cup. Water first (lemon and a pinch of sea salt is my favorite), then coffee.
  2. Always have it with food, ideally protein and fat. Eggs and avocado plus coffee? Yes, please.
  3. Cut yourself off by early afternoon.
  4. Want a second cup? Try matcha or green tea. You still get a lift, plus L-theanine, which has a calming effect. Herbal teas like tulsi or chamomile are great caffeine-free swaps too.

Give it two weeks

Just shifting the timing of your coffee can make a noticeable difference in your afternoon energy and your sleep. You don’t have to quit. You just have to make coffee work for you instead of against you.

Coffee timing is one small piece of my 30-Day Cortisol Reset, a done-for-you plan with a daily checklist, recipes and the natural tools I use with my coaching clients.
