You’re exhausted all day. You finally crawl into bed. And then… your brain throws a party. Or you fall asleep fine, and then BAM, you’re staring at the ceiling at 2am.

Sound familiar? That’s a classic sign that cortisol is out of rhythm.

What’s supposed to happen

Cortisol is meant to follow a daily wave: high in the morning to wake you up, then slowly drifting down at night so melatonin, your sleep hormone, can take over. When you’re under chronic stress, that wave gets flattened or flipped. You drag in the morning and get “tired but wired” at night.

And here’s the kicker: poor sleep raises cortisol the next day. So the cycle feeds itself until you break it.

Sleep saboteurs

  • Scrolling in bed. Blue light from screens tells your brain it’s still daytime and blocks melatonin.
  • Going to bed wired. Answering emails, a stressful conversation, or the news right before bed keeps your nervous system on high alert.
  • Too-light dinners. Skipping protein or carbs at dinner can leave your blood sugar low overnight, and a blood sugar drop can wake you up.
  • A hot, bright bedroom. Your body sleeps best cool and dark.

The grown-up bedtime routine

We gave our kids a bedtime routine because it works. Why did we stop doing it for ourselves? Here’s mine:

  1. Eat a balanced dinner with a slow carb: sweet potato, quinoa, lentils or squash. Slow carbs help your body relax into sleep.
  2. Screens off 30–60 minutes before bed. Read a real book or journal instead.
  3. Dim the lights after dinner.
  4. Wash the day away with a warm bath or shower. Epsom salts are a bonus.
  5. Turn on the diffuser with a calming blend you love.
  6. Cool, dark room. Around 65°F is the sweet spot for most people.
  7. Breathe: in for 4, hold for 4, out for 8. Repeat five times. It’s a simple way to shift your body into rest-and-digest mode.

Start with just one or two of these tonight. Sleep is the most important step in resetting cortisol, so it’s worth protecting.
