You see the Facebook highlight reels of someone’s life, and immediately fall into the comparison game. There are two sides of fb. Where do you fall? One side is the set who tells everything, and airs the dirty laundry. The ones I tend to avert my eyes from, because I feel like I shouldn’t be seeing it. The other side is the great life they have with all the goodies.
Now, I tend to be in the highlight reel side because I look at fb for fun and inspiration. But, I can also tell you that in between the highlights, there are always challenges and struggles that I have, just like anyone else. Nobody’s life is perfect, even if it looks like it is.
If we fall into that trap of comparing, we compare our yoga poses, our kids accomplishments, our cleaning products, our travel, our homes, cars, and even our recipes. Stop the comparison game! There are no winners. The only thing you should be thinking about is if you are living the life you want to live.
Does that involve Cheerios on the floor, and stepping on legos because that means you get to spend time at home with your kids?
Maybe it means less travels for now, because you are taking some precious time to care for an aging parent.
Or maybe this is the perfect time for you to go on yoga retreats and travel. Any of these are just right if you are nourishing your soul through your choices.
If you are right where you want to be, you will know it and feel it inside, where it counts. And, if you are not where you want to be, make a change. Yes, it sounds easy, and the truth – it really is!! You don’t have to do a 180 degree turn over night, but what if you made one choice that moves you closer to the life you want?
I always ask my nutrition clients to use this question as their measuring stick. Are the choices you are making moving you closer to or farther away from health? It can be as simple as a choice between soda and water with your meal. Every choice you make is either moving you closer toward or away from the life and health you want. And, if you make a choice that moves you away from it, don’t beat yourself up, because in just a second, you will get another opportunity to make the next choice. Bottom line is this: stop stressing over keeping up or having the perfect life, because I bet if you look around, you will see you’ve got your own set of highlight reels that are imperfectly perfect!
